Ooo Ganesha !!!!
For the past one week, I've been observing Lord Ganesh idols on either side of the road - in different colors and different sizes. But, I wonder what make people go for such posh Vinayaka idols. One reason which I can think of such lavish colors is the craziness and show-off nature of human kind. I feel that the competetion and pride plays an important role in going for big size idols.
Every year, 15-20 days before the festival, some experts raise their voice against the problems caused by such idols and the level of damage caused by their immersion in Hussain Sagar and other lakes. If we observe closely, as they say, just because of our happiness (craziness) for 9 days, we tend to become the root cause for many disasters to come in the near future. After immersion, all the chemical coating is mixed up with lake water and as a result, all acquatic animals die. And that water can never be potable. But, after the festival, no one cares till next year.
As per my knowledge, no one mentioned in Puranas or epics to prepare Ganesh idol with Plaster of paris and decorate with flashy colors (which are of course, chemicals). Even the story says that Parvati Devi prepared Ganesh with clay (Other version of story says that she prepared with flour - 'pindi'). So, in mythological perspective or environmental perspective, it is better to go for Eco-friendly idol (made of clay), which doesnt have any special make-up. It all depends on how you worship - but not on how much you spend on idol.
If Govt. is Environment-conscious, Govt. can ban on such activities. As people are tending more towards such Ganesh-mania every year, such ban can lead to protests from every corner. So, it is better to change our mindset and get Mr. Eco-friendly Vinayaka instead of Colorful and Chemical Vinayaka.
By the way, I bought Eco-friendly Vinayaka this year. Hope you follow the same from next year. Take the initiative and pass on. SAVE THE ENVIRONMENT.
Once upon a time, man lived WITH the Nature. Few decades back, man lived IN the Nature. Now man is living AGAINST the Nature.
